A study published in the September 1 issue of the journal SLEEP suggests that insomnia costs the typical U.S. worker 11.3 days of lost productivity on an annual basis. This equates to $2,280 in lost wages. On a nationwide scale, the total cost of insomnia and lost productivity is $63.2 billion, or 252.7 days annually.
These findings were pulled from a national survey involving 707,428 employees. The samples were taken from the American Insomnia Study, which was carried out by Harvard Medical School.
What causes insomnia?
A number of things may trigger a bout of insomnia. The National Sleep Foundation revealed that this type of sleep disorder may be spurred on by underlying medical or psychiatric conditions. Conversely, insomnia may be caused by unhealthy sleep habits, e.g. staying awake all night and trying to sleep in the daytime.
Certain biological factors may also cause insomnia, as well as the consumption
